Lesson 1 of 2

What a mentor does

4 min read

A new Muslim does not need a perfect teacher. They need a kind friend who has walked the road a little longer.

A mentor is

  • A friend who listens
  • A guide who points to good sources
  • Someone who shows up again and again

A mentor is not

  • A scholar who must answer everything
  • A judge of how well they are doing
  • In charge of their choices

The reward of guiding

A man asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, for a mount. He had none to give, and another man offered to guide him to someone who did. The Prophet said:

Whoever guides to a good deed will get the same reward as the doer of that deed.

Sahih Muslim 1893

You do not have to do everything yourself. Pointing someone to what is good already counts.

Be steady

Small and regular beats big and rare. A short message every week means more than a long talk once.

Same-gender mentoring

On this site, one-to-one support is between people of the same gender. This keeps everyone comfortable and safe, and it is how the team matches mentors.

Quick check

What is the main job of a mentor?

Remember

You are a friend and a guide, not a scholar. Be kind, be steady, and point to what is good.
