Your first conversations
The first chat sets the tone. Your goal is simple: help them feel heard and not alone.
A good first chat
Greet
Say salam, introduce yourself, and share a little about you.
Listen
Let them tell their story at their own pace.
Ask
What would help most right now?
One step
Choose one small thing for this week, and no more.
Ask before you explain
Everyone arrives with different needs. One person wants help with prayer. Another wants someone to talk to about their family.
A new Muslim writes to you for the first time.
- They say: I said my shahada a month ago. I don't know where to start.
- You say: Welcome, and congratulations. I am glad you wrote. What feels hardest right now?
- They say: Prayer. I'm scared I'll do it wrong.
- You say: That is normal. Let's pick just the first step, and I will walk with you.
Make it easy
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
Make matters easy and do not make them difficult, and give people glad tidings and do not drive them away.
Sahih al-Bukhari 69 and Sahih Muslim 1734 (agreed upon)
One small step this week is enough. Next week brings the next one.
A new Muslim says prayer feels overwhelming. What do you do first?
Listen first, ask what they need, and give one small step at a time.
