Lesson 3 of 3

Why are we here?

4 min read

Why am I here? Every person asks this at some point. Islam gives a clear answer, and it starts with a simple verse.

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

Quran 51:56 (Saheeh International translation)

Worship here is wider than ritual. It means knowing God, being thankful, being honest in your work, and being kind to others, all for His sake.

Life in Islam

  1. Made

God created you with care and on purpose.

  2. Tested

This life is a test of how you act, not a trap.

  3. Free

You choose what to believe and do.

  4. Returned

    Everyone returns to God.

  5. Judged with mercy

God judges with justice and forgives much.

Life as a test

[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving.

Quran 67:2 (Saheeh International translation)

A test means your choices matter. It also means hardship has meaning, and nothing is wasted.

Accountability and hope

You will answer for your life, and that is a comfort as well as a duty: no injustice goes unseen. Yet God's mercy is greater than our mistakes.

Watch

Khalid Yasin gives a long talk on this question. It is optional and in English.

Remember

You were made on purpose, to know and serve God. Life is a test, you will return to Him, and His mercy is wide.

Next, you will meet the prophets God sent to guide people.
